The items in the historic images section currently consist of reprints of the famed photographer, Edward S. Curtis' historic photographs of Native Americans. From 1896 to 1930, Edward S. Curtis was involved in a project that was both artistic and scholarly. His intent was to systematically record the leaders and the daily and ceremonial life of every major Native American tribe west of the Mississippi river. In the end, he took over 40,000 photographs of eighty tribes from the far north to Arizona. Curtis often obtained a heightened dramatic effect by utilizing light, focus and cropping. The results were often somewhat impressionistic and picturesque. Most of our historical images are available either framed or as photographs only. They are printed on heavyweight paper with archival inks.
